Combustion reactions are exothermic and always involve molecular oxygen.

When organic molecules combust, the reaction products are carbon dioxide and water (as well as heat).

The combustion of natural and artificial fibres differs in velocity, smell, colour of the flame, ash left behind.

Experiment:

- Cut 2 cm strips from different cloths made of natural and artificial fibres.
- Ignite each strip in turn.

Leading questions:
- What materials burn? At what rate?
- Can you explain what's happening?
- Can you set up other easy experiments that show combustion in action?
- Can you find applications of this property in your house or city?
